My first trip to the grocery store after my husband was prescribed a low sodium diet was a perfect example of the roller coaster ride of emotions that can come with a low sodium diagnosis. 1500 mg per day was hardwired into my brain, and I set out with my list ready to tackle my weekly grocery shopping as usual.
Two hours later, I was still in the grocery store with a mostly empty shopping cart. It felt like everything I picked up, all of our old reliables and favorite foods, were now out of bounds for his diet.
Chicken broth, sandwich bread, bacon, and even our favorite condiments betrayed us with their high sodium content. Reading the nutrition labels I'd previously paid little attention to was like deciphering hieroglyphics.
In that moment of confusion, disappointment, and overwhelm, I had a decision to make. Was I going to give up and accept a life of bland food to help keep my husband healthy, or would I dig in and learn everything I could about how to eat well and stay within our family's new low sodium requirement?
These coaching sessions are the result of my experience in the grocery store that day. It's full of everything I've learned about navigating what started as a new and scary low sodium diet, all the things I wish I'd known as I stood in aisle five on the verge of tears.
